    HRSA Nursing Scholarship Program

    Deadline: May 8, 2012

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) 2012 application cycle for the Nursing Scholarship Program has opened.

The purpose of the Nursing Scholarship Program (NSP) is to provide scholarships to nursing students in exchange for a minimum 2-year full-time service commitment (or part-time equivalent), at an eligible health care facility with a critical shortage of nurses.

Scholarships are awarded competitively and consist of payment for tuition, required school fees, Other Reasonable Costs (as defined on page 11) and a monthly support stipend.

News this year, up to fifty percent of NSP funds will be made available for nurse practitioners (NPs) students to address key issues pertaining to the expanding need for health care.

The NSP provides scholarships to nursing students in exchange for a minimum two-year, full-time service commitment — or a part-time commitment of a correspondingly longer duration — at a designated Critical Shortage Facility. These healthcare facilities are in areas with shortages of primary care or mental health professionals.

While in school, NSP participants receive tuition and fees, an annual payment for other reasonable costs such as expenses for books, clinical supplies and instruments, and a monthly stipend for living expenses.

As in previous years, the NSP is expected to be highly competitive. If qualified applicants exceed available funding, the NSP will prioritize applications based upon the applicant’s level of financial need.

The deadline to apply is May 8 (at 5 p.m. ET). To learn more about NSP eligibility and requirements, visit this link for more information.

    IESUS

    Deadline: April 16, 2012 at 5:00pm

The Graduate School announces the call for applications to the newly established Institute for Ethnic Studies in the United States (IESUS) Publication Fellowship for 2012-13. Through the support of The Graduate School Fund for Excellence & Innovation (GSFEI), the Institute for Ethnic Studies in the United States was established in the University of Washington Graduate School in 1981 to encourage multi-ethnic, and ethnic-specific multi-disciplinary research on problems or issues pertaining to members of ethnic minority groups. Its thrust is toward generating significant scholarly publications and other scholarly activity.

IESUS aspires to generate scholarly input about ethnic studies by creating new knowledge and by stimulating and supporting the scholarly activities of the University of Washington graduate community. The IESUS Publication Fellowship supports publication opportunities for graduate students working in these areas who are in-progress with a paper that will be newly submitted to a journal within the 2012-2013 academic year future, or have recently submitted to a journal and have received a “revise and resubmit” decision. To enhance their success in achieving publication, IESUS Publication Fellowship recipients will work under the guidance of and in close collaboration with their faculty advisor.

Administered by GO-MAP, the IESUS Publication Fellowship will provide one quarter of financial support to allow students time away from teaching or research responsibilities to focus on the work necessary to submit or revise/resubmit a publication. For this reason the IESUS Publication Fellowship cannot be held concurrently with departmental TA or RA responsibilities or other forms of Graduate School support or other comparable fellowship appointments.

    Award Details:
    • Priority for funding will be given to graduate students who are a first or second author and whose publications are being submitted to academic peer-reviewed journals.
    • Consistent with the philosophy of IESUS, the IESUS Publication Fellowship will be limited to publications whose topics focus on ethnic studies in the United States. One quarter fellowship award to be used in the 2012-13 year (summer 2012 through spring 2013). Recipients may choose the quarter in which they use the award.
    • Monthly stipend amount equivalent to what the awardee would earn at regular non- variable TA salary rates; waiver of tuition and mandatory fees (exception: no UPASS fee waiver); GAIP benefits eligibility.
    • Full-time enrollment required (10 credits in autumn/winter/spring; 2 credits in summer).
    • Students enrolled in fee-based programs are not eligible for consideration.

    Application Process

    • Completed IESUS Publication Award Applicant Cover Sheet (see "More Information")
    • Student Proposal. Three page maximum to include:
    • Description of publication and how this publication supports the mission of IESUS.
    • Description of how IESUS Publication Fellowship will aid in completion of the publication for submission/re-submission.
    • Proposed timeline for submission or resubmission.
    • Letter of support from student’s advisor describing how the IESUS Publication Fellowship will benefit the student. This letter must also outline in detail how the advisor will mentor and support the student in the submission/resubmission process.
