TA Position - NURS 405

TA 50% Position Spring 2012

A Teaching Assistant is needed in the Department of Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems to provide support for NURS 405: Adult/Peds. Assist in all aspects of teaching a large undergraduate nursing course, addressing acute care of ill adults and children. Run review sessions with students, tutor and mentor students, prepare tests, coordinate activities with instructors, lecturers, faculty, and students. Manage course website. Please visit the UW Time Schedule for specific times and days that the class is offered; must be available on Mondays from 10:30‐2:30p and Wednesdays from 8:30‐12:30p.

Roles and Responsibilities of the TA include:
  • Grading problem sets and other assignments
  • Taking answer sheets to upper campus for grading
  • Course record-keeping
  • Moodle website maintenance and support (posting of materials, etc)
  • Course support activities such as communications with faculty, guest faculty, and students
Qualifications:
  • Must be Nursing Graduate Student in good standing.
  • Must have strong Word and Excel skills
  • Must have strong organizational skills
  • Acute care clinical experience as an RN
  • Teaching experience

Rural Remote Training Grant

Provide Student Assistant support for the Rural Remote Training Grant: The purpose of this training grant is to strengthen and expand advanced nursing education in Western Washington’s remote and rural areas. With this grant renewal, we aim to continue to strengthen faculty technology-enhanced distance learning (TEDL) skills; improve/evaluate TEDL techniques; expand rural/remote community partnerships; and recruit, enroll, and graduate rural/remote students.

Roles and Responsibilities of the TA include:
  • Attend CREATE meetings and assist with agenda preparation and action items.
  • Assist with Rural Remote website development.
  • Assist with sustainability plans for Rural Remote and distance learning collaborations with TIER.
Qualifications:
  • Must be Nursing Graduate Student in good standing.
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Targeting Everett’s Health Disparities

Provide support for Targeting Everett’s Health Disparities (TEHD) Training Grant: Project objectives are to: (1) Reduce health disparities in Snohomish County by increasing access to and quality of primary care services, with particular emphasis on expanding and strengthening geriatric, pediatric, and mental health services. (2) Expand undergraduate and graduate nursing education experiences, improving student knowledge and skill in providing culturally sensitive care for MU groups. (3) Establish consultative and advisory structures to guide expansion of clinic education and services, establishing financial stability and long term sustainability. (4) Recruit Snohomish County residents into nursing education programs.

Roles and Responsibilities of the SA include:
  • Assist with student clinical placements and project identification at PEHC, as needed.
  • Attend a monthly grant/clinic meeting (in person or via phone).
  • Assist with patient data collection.

NIH Loan Repayment Programs

NIH Loan Repayment Programs Purpose: These programs often allow scientific investigators to remain in the research workforce, achieve research independence and focus their efforts on advancing the health of the nation. Opportunities are available in clinical research, pediatric research, health disparities research, contraception and infertility research, and clinical research for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Each year, some 1,600 research scientists benefit from the more than $70 million NIH invests in their careers through the extramural LRPs. BENEFITS: New LRP contracts are awarded for a two-year period and help repay up to $35,000 of qualified educational debt each year. Tax offsets also are provided as additional benefits. Participants may apply for competitive renewals, which are issued for one or two years. Undergraduate, graduate, medical school, and other health professional school loans qualify for repayment. An NIH grant or other NIH funding is not required to apply for or participate in the LRPs. ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must possess a doctoral-level degree (with the exception of the contraception and infertility research LRP); be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident; devote 20 hours or more per week to conducting qualified research funded by a domestic nonprofit, university, or government entity; and have qualified educational loan debt equal to or exceeding 20 percent of their institutional base salary. This course is core content in the undergraduate curriculum emphasizing nursing care of acute and chronic health conditions, particularly including in-patient care. Roles and Responsibilities of the TA include:
  • Working with the instructor to provide assistance and support with class and course materials.
  • Attending most lectures (Mon 8:30-11:20, Wed 9:30-11:20).
  • Conducting individual & small group help sessions with students.
  • Transporting exams to Office of Educational Assessment.
Qualifications:
  • Must be Nursing Graduate Student in good standing.
  • Current nursing licensure in State of Washington.
  • Experienced in medical-surgical and/or pediatric acute care nursing.
  • Recent clinical experience in acute care nursing.
  • Teaching experience preferred.
