IESUS

Deadline: April 16, 2012 at 5:00pm

The Graduate School announces the call for applications to the newly established Institute for Ethnic Studies in the United States (IESUS) Publication Fellowship for 2012-13. Through the support of The Graduate School Fund for Excellence & Innovation (GSFEI), the Institute for Ethnic Studies in the United States was established in the University of Washington Graduate School in 1981 to encourage multi-ethnic, and ethnic-specific multi-disciplinary research on problems or issues pertaining to members of ethnic minority groups. Its thrust is toward generating significant scholarly publications and other scholarly activity.

IESUS aspires to generate scholarly input about ethnic studies by creating new knowledge and by stimulating and supporting the scholarly activities of the University of Washington graduate community. The IESUS Publication Fellowship supports publication opportunities for graduate students working in these areas who are in-progress with a paper that will be newly submitted to a journal within the 2012-2013 academic year future, or have recently submitted to a journal and have received a “revise and resubmit” decision. To enhance their success in achieving publication, IESUS Publication Fellowship recipients will work under the guidance of and in close collaboration with their faculty advisor.

Administered by GO-MAP, the IESUS Publication Fellowship will provide one quarter of financial support to allow students time away from teaching or research responsibilities to focus on the work necessary to submit or revise/resubmit a publication. For this reason the IESUS Publication Fellowship cannot be held concurrently with departmental TA or RA responsibilities or other forms of Graduate School support or other comparable fellowship appointments.

Award Details:
  • Priority for funding will be given to graduate students who are a first or second author and whose publications are being submitted to academic peer-reviewed journals.
  • Consistent with the philosophy of IESUS, the IESUS Publication Fellowship will be limited to publications whose topics focus on ethnic studies in the United States. One quarter fellowship award to be used in the 2012-13 year (summer 2012 through spring 2013). Recipients may choose the quarter in which they use the award.
  • Monthly stipend amount equivalent to what the awardee would earn at regular non- variable TA salary rates; waiver of tuition and mandatory fees (exception: no UPASS fee waiver); GAIP benefits eligibility.
  • Full-time enrollment required (10 credits in autumn/winter/spring; 2 credits in summer).
  • Students enrolled in fee-based programs are not eligible for consideration.
