Community Wayfinding (CWF) Concept Development Project

Deadline: January 31, 2012

Sponsor: CDC Healthy Aging Research Network

Professor Basia Belza, PI

Our project is focused on community wayfinding and seeks to examine it from a public health perspective. The overall aims of the project are to: conduct a systematic review of the literature; synthesize theory and existing research; review existing wayfinding measurement/assessments; develop a conceptual framework for community wayfinding in older adults; identify priorities for future research; and define implications for wayfinding relevant policy and practice.

We will be attentive to special needs populations, particularly those of older adults, but will not focus exclusively on these groups. In a similar vein, we do not anticipate investing heavily in the growing literature on individually oriented wayfinding technologies. Nonetheless, these various components are likely to be reflected in the conceptual framework resulting from our work. One or more manuscripts for publication in a peer-reviewed journal will be developed as part of this project. Responsibilities:
  • Assist the UW HPRC project librarian to search the literature using pre-established criteria; locate and organize articles per guidelines.
  • Assist project members with the annotation and summarization of identified literature and other resources.
  • Coordinate all project communications, including the scheduling of local and national project meetings, attending meetings, and taking and distributing meeting notes. National meetings are conducted telephonically and/or through a web-conference format. Some local meetings will be held in person.
Seeking UW undergraduate or gradute student:

Student should have: a scholarly interest in public health, aging, built environment, and/or urban planning; writes clearly; communicates effectively across a variety of platforms, e.g. email, phone and in meeting settings; is a practiced and efficient organizer and works well under deadlines.
